Did you know that tobacco kills more Americans each year than alcohol, AIDS, car crashes, illegal drugs, murder, and suicide combined?

Nicotine addiction is the most common form of chemical dependence in the United States. Breaking free of this addiction sometimes takes multiple attempts before success. At NCHD we take a multi-pronged approach to tobacco cessation.

If you are a tobacco-user who is looking to quit, a clinician working with patients that use tobacco, or are simply looking for cessation information, NCHD may have a program or resource that is right for you.

Whether you are a provider, adult, youth, or school, please check out the list of services below to find out how we can help.

If you’d like more information about any of our tobacco cessation programs, or the Tobacco-Free Schools law, please contact:

Ask, Advise, Refer – Information for Clinicians

NCHD collaborates with healthcare providers, dental practices, and mental health centers to implement tobacco cessation into their clinical practices. We are available to assist each site in assessing their current practices, and developing a protocol for asking, advising, referring and connecting patients to appropriate resources.

Tobacco-Free Schools

Second Chance Alternative to Suspension

As part of our tobacco initiative, Northeast Colorado Health Department also works with school districts in our six-county region to help strengthen their Tobacco-Free School policies, by providing support and resources.

We encourage the schools in our region to use the Second Chance program as an alternative-to-suspension for tobacco-related infractions.

Second Chance is a program for youth in grades 6-12 who violate tobacco policy at school, or tobacco law in the community, or who are experimenting with tobacco but have not yet violated any policy or law. Thanks to funding from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, Second Chance is free for all schools, districts, and youth-serving organizations in Colorado.

Second Chance helps students understand the risks of nicotine and vaping while building decision-making, coping and refusal skills that support healthier choices and future behavior change, while keeping students engaged in the learning environment. Second Chance modules are available in English and Spanish.

Schools or organizations designate staff administrators to enroll students, monitor progress, issue certificates, and administer their account. If you have any questions about the program or to sign up, please visit SecondChanceTobacco.org or contact Talya.
