Black and white striped skunk walks in green grass.

In Akron on Friday, October 31, 2025, a rabid skunk was identified in town. Due to the number of reports, it is suspected that there may be multiple skunks affected. To stay safe, please avoid any contact with all wildlife, especially any wild animal behaving in an unusual manner. Make sure your children are warned to never touch any animal they may see in the neighborhood, and keep all pets on leash or confined to avoid interaction with wildlife. As always, make sure your pets are up to date with their rabies vaccinations. If you have concerns for livestock, please talk to your veterinarian.
If you have any questions you may contact Colorado Parks and Wildlife at 970-842-6300.
In the event you have been exposed to a skunk that is acting strangely, please seek medical attention and then contact NCHD at 970-522-3741.

Snow and Canada geese during fall migration standing and landing in a mowed farm field on a foggy morning.

While enjoying the beauty of bird migrations, don’t forget that wild birds can carry Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) without showing signs. Waterfowl are common carriers and can pass the virus to other species. By taking precautions when hunting or enjoying the outdoors, you can help restrict the spread of this potentially devastating disease.

The Northeast Colorado Health Department is your trusted ally in safeguarding and promoting community well-being.

At the heart of our mission lies a commitment to protect health and inspire prevention. Our rural public health workforce is made up of just over 40 staff members and covers 9,200 square miles of territory with an office in each of the six counties. We have proudly been serving Logan, Morgan, Phillips, Sedgwick, Washington and Yuma counties since 1948.
